Saint Petersburg is a city with history in winter swimming, but for more than 20 years, there were no major winter swimming events.
But all of this is about to change. On March 18, 2017, an international winter swim took place on the beach of the Trubetskoy bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress, titled as "Revival of the tradition of winter swimming in the Peter and Paul Fortress of St. Petersburg".
The swim took place at the heart of Saint Petersburg, on a selected area of water on The Great Neva river, surrounded by stunning sights of this magical city. The temperature of the water was +0.3C. Participants were able to take part swimming in the following distances:
A total of 50 participants aged from 22 to 65 gathered from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Belarus and different parts of Russia to take start in this event.
A venue like this is truly unique. "The Trubetskoi bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress, sheltered from the strong current, located in the historic center of a city with population of 5 million, can be considered one of the best places in the world for holding international competitions in winter swimming" said Mariia Yrjö-Koskinen, IWSA President.
As to what future holds, Saint Petersburg is already on board and you will be able to take part in the 1st Winter Swimming Championships of Saint Petersburg next season already, right before the Winter Swimming World Championships 2018.
