10.02.2017 IWSA NEWS

As some of you may know, in 2016 Belarus was one of the countries who joined IWSA. This year, we were invited to participate in the 2nd Belarusian Winter Swimming Championships “Minsk Open”.

The championships were held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, on river Svislach. Although this is only the second championship, it already attracted 167 participants from 8 different countries (Austria, Belarus, Belgium, France, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Estonia) with 15 teams registered for relays. Winter swimmers competed in the following distances:

  • 25m Butterfly
  • 25m Breaststroke
  • 25m Freestyle
  • 50m Breaststroke
  • 50m Freestyle
  • 100m Breaststroke
  • 100m Freestyle
  • 200m Freestyle
  • 450m Freestyle
  • 4x25m Freestyle Relay

The youngest participant was 7 years old, and the oldest 77 (a gap of 70 years, makes us believe winter swimming unites both young and old).

Organization of the event was on a high level, with the help of local authorities and secured by rescue services, ambulance etc. All of the participants were pleased with the level of the event and enjoyed being a part of it.

In the future, the Belgart winter swimming federation, who are the organizers of this event, are planning on participating in the IWSA World Cup and look forward for an international event with many guests from other countries.
